The short answer

Renting a truck makes sense if you have strong help, a free weekday or Saturday morning, a disposal site that will take your load, and items that are easy to reach. Junk removal makes sense if the items are in the basement or upstairs, you are short on helpers or time, or the load includes things a disposal site may refuse. Flat pickup prices: sofa $126, quarter truck about 4 cubic yards $241, half truck about 8 cubic yards $431, all carried out from any floor.

The DIY route, step by step

  1. Rent the truck or van and pick it up.
  2. Load it. From a Detroit basement, that means everything up a narrow stair, out the side door, down the drive.
  3. Tie it down. On I-75, I-94, I-696 or the Lodge, loose loads shift and fall.
  4. Drive to a disposal site that takes your material, during its hours.
  5. Unload it yourself.
  6. Return the truck, refueled, on time.

That is a half day at minimum, often a full one, and it needs at least two people.

Where you can take it

SOCRRA transfer station, 991 Coolidge, Troy. $75 per ton with a $50 minimum (effective July 1, 2025). Hand-unload only. Open Monday to Friday 6 to 10 a.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. No yard waste and no brush or woody material.

Dearborn DPW yard, 2951 Greenfield. Free for Dearborn residents on the third Saturday of each month, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Warren recycling center. For Warren residents; takes furniture, appliances, electronics and limited construction debris, not stumps, shingles or hazardous waste. Staff judge loads.

Regional landfills exist across Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and Monroe counties; check each one's current gate rate and residential policy before going.

The weight and distance math

The Troy gate charges by weight: $75 per ton, with a $50 minimum. A ton is 2,000 pounds. A truckload of furniture and boxes is bulky but often light, so many household loads pay the minimum. Plaster, tile, wet carpet and masonry are the opposite: small piles, heavy bills, and they can push a rental truck toward its weight limit.

Distance matters in a metro this wide. Troy is a short drive from Royal Oak or Clawson, but from Downriver, Canton or Macomb Township, a round trip to the transfer station and back to the rental lot can take a good part of the morning before you have unloaded anything. And because the weekday window closes at 10 a.m., a slow load-out at home can mean missing it entirely and paying for the truck another day.

The hidden costs

  • Time. Transfer station hours in Troy end at 10 a.m. on weekdays. That means taking a morning off work, or getting there early Saturday.
  • Helpers. Two people minimum for a sofa or fridge, more for a piano or a chest freezer from a basement.
  • Injury risk. Steep basement stairs and icy steps in winter.
  • Damage. Plaster walls, door frames and banisters in an old house.
  • Refused items. Tires, fluids, refrigerant appliances and hazardous waste may be refused or need special handling.

The pickup route

Send a photo or pick items online. You see the price before you book. Choose a 2-hour arrival window, 7 days a week, 8am to midnight. Same-day pickup is available when you book by 4 PM. The crew carries everything out from any floor, loads it, and handles disposal. We recycle whatever we can and try to donate usable items when local charities accept them.

Item or loadFlat price
Sofa / Couch$126
Refrigerator (Standard)$164
Freezer (Chest)$146
Upright Piano$364
1/4 truck (~4 cubic yards)$241
3/8 truck (~6 cubic yards)$338
1/2 truck (~8 cubic yards)$431
Full truck (~16 cubic yards)$732

A side-by-side example

A basement in a Warren brick ranch: sofa, chest freezer, shelving and boxes. About a 3/8 truck.

  • DIY: truck rental, fuel, two helpers, a weekday morning to make the Troy hours, the gate fee from the $50 minimum, and carrying a chest freezer up basement stairs.
  • Pickup: 3/8 truck, $338, carried out.

Or by item, the sofa and freezer alone: $126 + $146 = $272.

A second example: an upright piano in a Boston-Edison parlor plus a fridge from the kitchen. A rental truck does not solve the piano; it needs a crew and a careful carry down the front steps. As a pickup: $364 + $164 = $528.

When DIY wins

If you already own a pickup, live near Troy or Dearborn, have the items in the garage already, and have a free morning, driving it yourself can be cheaper. If you are moving anyway and the rental truck is already in the driveway, a dump run on the way out is reasonable. A sensible middle path: take the light, easy load yourself and book a pickup for the heavy basement items. For everything else, get a price from a photo and compare.
