The short answer

Small amounts of renovation debris can go out with the City of Detroit's weekly bulk pickup, in pieces under 50 pounds and up to 2 cubic yards a week. Concrete, brick, asphalt and shingles are excluded. For anything bigger, flat prices: full kitchen cabinet set rip-out $293, cast iron bathtub $185, cast iron radiator $123, carpet per room $71, concrete or masonry $219 per quarter truck, or a truck-fill tier from $241 for mixed debris.

What the city will and will not take

Detroit's weekly bulk program, in place since June 3, 2024, accepts bulk and renovation materials up to 2 cubic yards a week, about the size of two stoves. The renovation rules:

  • Each item under 50 pounds.
  • No concrete, brick or asphalt.
  • No shingles.
  • No metal poles or pipes.
  • Out by 7 a.m., never in front of a vacant lot.

Outlier Media reported in 2022 that exceeding the limit (2 cubic yards or 1,000 pounds) can bring a $1,500 fine. A bathroom gut alone can exceed that in a weekend.

In the suburbs, rules differ. Warren residents have the city recycling center, which takes limited construction debris but not shingles or stumps. In SOCRRA cities, the Troy transfer station takes household waste by the ton at hand-unload hours but no brush or woody yard material. Check before you load a trailer.

Detroit rehabs are heavy

Most Detroit ZIP codes report a median year built of 1939 or earlier. Renovating houses that age, whether a Corktown cottage, a Woodbridge Victorian, a Brush Park rehab or a brick two-flat on the west side, produces debris that newer houses do not:

  • Plaster and lath. Very heavy, very dusty, and a lot of it per wall.
  • Cast iron. Radiators, clawfoot and built-in tubs, drain stacks.
  • Old masonry. Chimney tear-downs, porch steps, basement partitions.
  • Layers of flooring over the original hardwood.

Detroit's population is growing again, with a 2025 estimate of 649,095, the first increase since 1950, and rehab work is part of that. So is the debris.

Weight is the part people underestimate. A single wall of plaster and lath can fill several contractor bags, and each bag of wet or dense plaster can approach the city's 50-pound limit for a single renovation piece. Two or three rooms of it will reach the curb program's 1,000-pound threshold long before the pile looks like 2 cubic yards. Cast iron is worse: one radiator or one built-in tub is already over 50 pounds, so none of it can go out on bulk day at all. That is why heavy items have their own prices on the list, and why masonry is priced per quarter truck rather than by volume alone.

Sequencing a rehab so the debris never piles up

  1. Contents first. In inherited or long-vacant houses, the furniture and boxes come out before any demo. Priced as a truck tier from photos, often a half truck at $431 or a full truck at $732.
  2. Fixtures next. Tubs, toilets, vanities, radiators and appliances, priced per item. Pull them before the walls come down so the crew has clear paths.
  3. Demo in phases. Bag plaster as you go, half-full, and book a pickup at the end of each phase rather than letting bags fill the dining room.
  4. Masonry last and separate. Chimney brick and porch concrete are priced at $219 per quarter truck because of weight. Keep them apart from lighter debris.
  5. Final sweep. Leftover lumber, doors and packaging from new materials. Lumber bundles are $41 each.

Worked examples

  • Bathroom gut in a 1920s bungalow: cast iron tub, detached toilet, vanity: $185 + $64 + $69 = $318. Plaster and tile in bags priced on top, for example 10 bags of debris at $132: $318 + $132 = $450.
  • Kitchen tear-out: full cabinet set and two stone countertop sections: $293 + $111 + $111 = $515.
  • Heating conversion: five cast iron radiators: $123 + $123 + $123 + $123 + $123 = $615.
  • Chimney or porch tear-down: masonry is $219 per quarter truck.
  • Flooring refresh in a Ferndale bungalow: carpet from three rooms and the old interior doors being replaced, four of them: $71 + $71 + $71 + $41 + $41 + $41 + $41 = $377.

Bags or a truck tier?

For a steady trickle of debris, bag pricing works: 10 bags $132, 20 bags $259, 30 bags $385. For a big demo day, a truck-fill tier is simpler: quarter truck about 4 cubic yards $241, half truck about 8 cubic yards $431, full truck about 16 cubic yards $732. Heavy masonry is priced separately because of its weight.

Bags full of plaster get heavy fast. Fill them halfway.

For contractors and investors

Crews are vetted, insured local haulers, and a certificate of insurance can be emailed within 1 hour for buildings that require one. Property managers and investors with several houses can set up an account covering multiple properties. Michigan's dumping law holds an employer liable when dumping is done at its direction or with its knowledge, so know where your debris goes.

Paint left over from the job is accepted, $30 per gallon can and $52 per 5-gallon bucket. Solvents and other hazardous leftovers are handled case by case, so ask before including them.

Frequently asked questions

Does Detroit bulk pickup take renovation debris?

Yes, in pieces under 50 pounds each and within the 2-cubic-yard weekly limit. Concrete, brick, asphalt and shingles are excluded. Anything heavier, like a radiator or a cast iron tub, needs another route.

How much does it cost to remove a cast iron tub?

A cast iron bathtub is $185. A fiberglass tub is $90. Both are carried out from any floor, including second-floor bathrooms in old two-flats, with no stairs fee.

How is concrete priced?

Concrete or masonry debris is $219 per quarter truck, priced separately because of its weight. Send a photo with a tape measure in it so the volume can be judged accurately.

Do you remove kitchen cabinets?

A full kitchen cabinet set rip-out is $293. Individual base cabinets are $67 and uppers $48. Stone countertop sections are $111 each and laminate sections $56.

Can contractors get a certificate of insurance?

Yes. A COI can be emailed within 1 hour. Managed buildings Downtown and in Midtown usually ask for one before the crew can use the elevator or dock.

Can you haul debris in stages during a long rehab?

Yes. Book a pickup at the end of each phase; each one is priced from photos before booking. Staging keeps bags out of the rooms you are still working in.
