The short answer

For a big garage or basement purge, late spring after the thaw and early fall before the snow are the easiest windows in Metro Detroit. After a summer storm, book as soon as the water is out. In winter, book on a dry day and clear the walkway. The price does not change with the season or the day: flat list prices, $100 minimum, no same-day surcharge. Same-day pickup is available when you book by 4 PM, 7 days a week.

Spring thaw: April to June

This is when Metro Detroit clears out. The snow is gone, garages can be opened all the way, and you can see what the winter did to the basement. It is also when houses go on the market, and sellers clear before listing photos.

Good for: garage cleanouts, basement purges, yard waste, sheds, the dead snow blower. Book a few days ahead in late spring, especially weekends.

Tip: if you live in the City of Detroit, put the easy things out for weekly bulk pickup, up to 2 cubic yards by 7 a.m., and book the pickup for the heavy items and the overflow.

Summer: storms and move-outs

Metro Detroit gets summer storms that flood basements. When that happens, everything wet on the basement floor (carpet, boxes, upholstered furniture, mattresses) needs to come out fast, before mold sets in. That is a removal job, not a remediation job; for water extraction and mold, call a specialist. For the removal, book as soon as the water is out. Wet carpet is $71 per room to remove on our list, and a mixed load of soaked contents is priced by truck tier.

Summer is also student and lease turnover season around Wayne State in Midtown, Eastern Michigan in Ypsilanti and Oakland University in Auburn Hills and Rochester Hills. Check your lease end date and book early.

Fall: before the snow

September through November is the second good window. Clear the garage before the car needs to go back in for winter, empty the hot tub before it freezes, and get rid of the patio set before it sits under snow for four months.

Fall is also when window AC units come out for the year, and the dead ones get noticed. A large window unit is $109. A typical fall garage reset in Sterling Heights or Canton, with a patio table, four patio chairs and a dead lawn mower: $89 + $30 + $30 + $30 + $30 + $65 = $274.

Winter: December to March

Winter jobs are fine, and often easier to schedule. Plan for:

  • Ice on basement stairwells and side steps. Salt the route the day before.
  • Snow on the driveway. Clear a path to the street and a spot for the truck.
  • Short days. We run until midnight, but outdoor work is easier in daylight.
  • Curb items frozen into snowbanks. Anything left out for the city's bulk day after a storm can be hard to collect. That is a good week to book a pickup instead.

Holiday hosting and January resolutions both generate clear-outs. An artificial Christmas tree that finally lost its lights is $37.

Timing around your bulk day

In the City of Detroit, bulk now comes every week, so you can split a job: the light, easy pieces go to the curb, and the heavy or below-grade items get booked. A sensible order:

  1. Sort first. Pull out anything excluded from the curb, like tires, shingles, concrete, auto parts and pipe, plus anything too heavy for you to carry up.
  2. Book the pickup for the day before your bulk day if you want the street clear for the city truck, or the day after if you want to see what the curb left behind.
  3. Keep the curb pile under 2 cubic yards. Outlier Media reported fines of $1,500 for going over.

In Dearborn, the free DPW drop-off at 2951 Greenfield runs the third Saturday of each month, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., for residents who can haul their own. If the third Saturday is two weeks out and the item is in the basement, the wait is the real cost.

Life events set the calendar more than weather

  • Selling a house. Clear before the listing photos, not after the inspection. In spring, that means booking about when you call the agent.
  • Settling an estate. Many Detroit-area estates are in long-owned houses with full basements and garages. Plan the cleanout after family has taken what they want, and before a buyer's walk-through.
  • Lease ends. Month-end is the crunch for elevator reservations Downtown and in Midtown. Book a few days ahead and match the 2-hour window to the elevator.
  • Renovations. Book the haul for the day after demo, so debris does not sit in the driveway through a rainstorm.

Time of day and day of week

  • Hours: 7 days a week, 8am to midnight.
  • Same-day: book by 4 PM.
  • Arrival: you pick a 2-hour window.
  • Buildings: match the window to your elevator reservation or loading-dock time. A COI is emailed within 1 hour if the building needs one.
  • Driving it yourself instead? SOCRRA's Troy transfer station is only open weekday mornings 6 to 10 a.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month for junk removal in Detroit?

Late spring after the thaw and early fall before the snow are the easiest for garage and basement jobs. Prices are the same year-round.

Is junk removal more expensive on weekends or same-day?

No. There is no same-day surcharge, and prices are the same every day of the week.

Can you remove water-damaged items after a basement flood?

Yes, the removal part. Water extraction and mold remediation need a specialist. Wet carpet removal is $71 per room.

Do you work in winter?

Yes, 7 days a week, 8am to midnight. Clear and salt the route from the door to the street.

How late can I book for same-day pickup?

Book by 4 PM for same-day pickup.

Should I book before or after my Detroit bulk day?

Either works. Before keeps the curb clear for the city truck; after lets you see what the curb left. Keep the curb pile under 2 cubic yards either way.
