The short answer

A Metro Detroit basement cleanout is usually priced as a truck-fill tier: a 3/8 truck of about 6 cubic yards is $338, a half truck of about 8 cubic yards $431, a 5/8 truck of about 10 cubic yards $513. Heavy single items are priced from the list, such as a washer $133, chest freezer $146 or cast iron radiator $123. Everything is carried up from the basement with no stairs fee. The city's curb pickup does not come inside, so getting it up the stairs is the whole job.

Why Detroit basements fill up

The City of Detroit's median home was built in 1947; Wayne County's in 1956; Warren's in 1965. Most Detroit ZIP codes, and the Grosse Pointe ZIP 48230, sit at the census floor of "1939 or earlier." Basements are the default across the city and the postwar brick ranches and bungalows of Warren, Livonia, Dearborn Heights, St. Clair Shores, Royal Oak and Ferndale.

A basement is where everything goes when nobody decides what to do with it. Over decades, that adds up: the old couch, the previous washer, a dead dehumidifier, the kids' furniture, boxes of paperwork, holiday decorations, and whatever the last owner left.

Not every basement is the same job

  • Pre-war city houses in Corktown, Woodbridge, Boston-Edison and Indian Village: low ceilings, old coal or boiler rooms, cast iron radiators and pipe left from heating changes, and stairs that were never built for furniture. Expect heavy single items and slow carries.
  • 1930s–50s brick homes in East English Village, Morningside and Grandmont Rosedale: a laundry corner, a workbench, a finished rec room with paneling and carpet. Usually a 3/8 to half truck.
  • Postwar ranches in Livonia, Warren and Dearborn Heights: full-footprint basements, often finished, often holding two generations of furniture. Downsizing jobs here frequently reach a 5/8 or 3/4 truck.
  • Large lakefront and estate houses in the Grosse Pointes: several basement rooms, plus storage under porches. Price by photo, room by room.

The stairs are the job

Detroit basement stairs are typically narrow, steep, and turn at the top into a kitchen or a side door landing. Headroom is low under the main floor joists. Many have a railing on one side only.

  • Measure the tightest point before trying to move anything big yourself: the turn, the door frame, the headroom.
  • Big pieces may have come down in parts, or before a wall or duct went in. They may need to come apart, or be cut apart, to come up.
  • Never work alone on basement stairs with a heavy load, and never be the one below.

Crews carry items out from anywhere in the home, any floor. There is no stairs fee. In winter, clear snow and ice from the side-door steps and the path to the driveway before the arrival window; that is often the slipperiest part of the carry.

After a summer storm

Metro Detroit has had summer storms that flood basements across the region. When it happens, the contents on the floor need to come out quickly: carpet, padding, boxes, upholstered furniture, mattresses.

What we do: remove and haul the damaged contents. What we do not do: water extraction, drying or mold remediation. For those, call a specialist, and if you are filing an insurance claim, photograph everything before it goes.

Wet carpet removal is $71 per room. A mixed load of soaked contents is priced by truck tier.

What the city curb will not do

The City of Detroit's weekly bulk pickup, in place since June 3, 2024, takes up to 2 cubic yards a week, about the size of two stoves, at the curb by 7 a.m. It excludes concrete, brick, shingles, tires, auto parts, fluids, metal poles and pipes, and tree trunks, and renovation materials must be under 50 pounds each. Outlier Media reported in 2022 that exceeding the limit can bring a $1,500 fine.

For a full basement, that means many weeks of carrying things up yourself, one 2-cubic-yard batch at a time. A half truck is about four weeks of curb allowance in one visit.

Basement prices

Item or loadFlat price
Sofa / Couch$126
Sectional Sofa (3-Piece)$185
Washer$133
Dryer$128
Freezer (Chest)$146
Water Heater (Tank)$131
Dehumidifier$77
Cast Iron Radiator$123
Metal Shelving$71
Carpet — Removal (per room)$71
3/8 truck (~6 cubic yards)$338
1/2 truck (~8 cubic yards)$431
5/8 truck (~10 cubic yards)$513

A basement laundry corner with a washer, a dryer and a dead dehumidifier: $133 + $128 + $77 = $338. A rec room with a 3-piece sectional and its carpet: $185 + $71 = $256. A Woodbridge boiler room with two cast iron radiators and the old tank water heater: $123 + $123 + $131 = $377.

How to run it

  1. Pull out what you are keeping and put it upstairs or in one corner.
  2. Check boxes for papers and photographs. In inherited houses, deeds, tax records and family photos often turn up in basement boxes.
  3. Set aside paint (accepted, $30 per gallon can) and any hazardous items, which are handled case by case.
  4. Disconnect appliances. Gas dryers, water heaters and furnaces need to be shut off and disconnected before pickup.
  5. Take photos of every wall and corner for a quote, including under the stairs.
  6. Book a 2-hour window. Same-day is available when you book by 4 PM, 7 days a week.

When to schedule it

Spring thaw, April to June, is the busiest stretch: basements get cleared before listings and after a winter of stuff piling up. Late summer brings storm-soaked contents that cannot wait. Winter weekdays are usually the easiest to book, and the cold keeps damp basements from smelling. Get a price from a photo.
