The short answer

Air conditioners contain refrigerant, so they cannot be treated like a chair. Federal rules require the refrigerant to be recovered at final disposal, and Warren will not collect an AC unit or dehumidifier at the curb without a technician's sticker showing the Freon was removed. The flat pickup route: small window unit $87, large window unit $109, portable AC $85, outdoor condenser or heat pump $115, dehumidifier $77. Orders under $100 are billed at the $100 minimum.

Why AC units are a special case

Window units, portable ACs, dehumidifiers and central-air condensers all hold refrigerant in a sealed loop. Federal regulation 40 CFR 82.155 says whoever does the final disposal must recover that refrigerant, or get a signed statement that it was already recovered.

In practice, that pushes the problem back onto whoever is getting rid of the unit. Some programs accept it and handle recovery. Some, like Warren, want proof it is already done before they touch it.

Do not cut the lines or vent it yourself. Releasing refrigerant is exactly what the rule exists to prevent.

Warren's sticker rule

Warren's sanitation rules treat air conditioners and dehumidifiers differently from refrigerators. A fridge or freezer can go to the curb empty, with the doors off, with the refrigerant still inside. An AC unit or dehumidifier cannot: the Freon must be removed by a qualified technician, who puts a sticker on the unit to show it, before the city will pick it up.

For one old window unit, paying a technician for a visit to recover refrigerant and sticker it can be more hassle than the unit is worth. That is the gap a flat pickup fills. Warren is Detroit's largest suburb, with about 139,000 people and a lot of 1960s brick ranches, so this rule touches a lot of basements every summer.

Detroit and other suburbs

City of Detroit: weekly bulk pickup since June 3, 2024, up to 2 cubic yards a week, set out by 7 a.m. Check the city's bulk page for how it handles air conditioners on your route before you put one out.

Dearborn: some appliances require a fee-based special pickup rather than regular weekly bulk.

Other cities: check your own city's page. Do not assume Warren's or Detroit's rule applies in Royal Oak, Livonia or Sterling Heights.

Three routes, compared on time and money

  1. City curb (where it is accepted). Free. You carry the unit out yourself, set it out by 7 a.m., and wait for your collection day. In Warren, add the step of booking a technician to recover the refrigerant and sticker the unit first, which means a second appointment and whatever that technician charges.
  2. Hand it to your HVAC contractor. Sensible if a new system is going in anyway. Ask when you sign the quote whether removal of the old condenser and furnace is included, because it is much harder to arrange after the crew has left.
  3. Flat pickup. One visit, carried out from wherever it sits, no prep beyond unplugging it. A dead dehumidifier in a Livonia basement plus a large window unit upstairs is $77 + $109 = $186, with a 2-hour arrival window you choose.

If you only have one small window unit and you are on a Detroit route that takes it, the curb is the cheapest answer. Once there is a basement, a second unit, or a Warren sticker involved, the time cost usually tips it the other way.

Window units in old Detroit houses

Detroit's median home was built in 1947, and plenty of houses that age cool with window units. They accumulate: one per bedroom, a spare in the basement, a dead one in the garage from three summers ago. Dehumidifiers pile up the same way, because nearly every pre-1970 house in the metro has a basement that runs damp in July.

Getting a window unit out safely:

  • Two people. One inside holding it, one unscrewing the brackets. A large unit is heavy and front-loaded.
  • Lift up and in, never let it tip outward. On a second floor over a walkway, a dropped unit is dangerous.
  • Keep it level on the way down the stairs so oil and water stay put.
  • Close the window and check the sash before you walk away. Old wood windows can drop.

Once it is out of the window, the crew carries it from any floor, with no stairs fee.

Condensers and furnaces

When a central-air system is replaced, the HVAC contractor usually takes the old condenser and furnace. If they did not, or you are clearing a house that had one sitting in the side yard for years, the outdoor unit is $115 and a furnace is $131: $115 + $131 = $246. In an older Detroit house where the old tank water heater is coming out at the same time, add $131: $115 + $131 + $131 = $377.

The condenser must be disconnected from power and lines first. That is the contractor's job, not the hauler's.

When to do it

The end of a Detroit summer is when window units come out, and when people find out the old one does not work. Spring thaw, April to June, is when the basement and garage get cleared and the spares from past summers turn up. Winter is slower, but snow and ice on basement steps and driveways are worth clearing before a pickup. Book by 4 PM for same-day pickup and get a price from a photo. Frequently asked questions

How do I dispose of a window air conditioner in Detroit?

Check the City of Detroit's bulk page for its AC rule on your route, or book a pickup. A small window unit is $87 and a large one $109. Orders under $100 are billed at the $100 minimum.

Does Warren pick up air conditioners?

Only after a qualified technician has removed the Freon and put a sticker on the unit. Fridges and freezers are different: they can go out empty with the doors off.

Do I need to remove the Freon myself?

No, and you should not try. Federal rules require refrigerant recovery at final disposal by whoever handles it.

How much is condenser removal?

An outdoor AC condenser or heat pump is $115, once it is disconnected from power and lines.

Can you take a dehumidifier?

Yes, for $77. It falls under the $100 minimum on its own, so it pairs well with a window AC: $87 + $77 = $164.

Do I need to drain the unit first?

Just unplug it and empty any water pan or bucket. The crew carries it out level from any floor at the list price.
